100 Scholars Robotics Alliance

Documentary for the 100 Scholars Robotics Alliance

Project

Jeff Schwartz of Primalux Media called on long time musical partners, Glenn Schloss and Erik Blicker of Flavorlab Score, to create original music for The 100 Scholars Robotics Alliance. A full team effort, Flavorlab also provided mix and music licensing for the film. The organization is the 2020 winner of Mutual of America‘s Community Partnership Award. The 100 Black Men of Atlanta created the initiative alongside the Johnson STEM Activity Center, FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), and Millennium Training Systems. They aim to inspire interest and involvement in STEM among Atlanta’s youth. The city is the south’s rapidly growing tech hub. The program introduces young talent to many of the companies that make their home there.

Process

With over a decade of collaboration under their belt, the trio faced a new challenge in the age of COVID-19. This is the first time the three scored together remotely. First, Jeff’s team completed a carefully planned trip to Atlanta to conduct interviews and film. Once editing was wrapped, the scoring team convened via FaceTime. Traditionally, the composers have kept close quarters with their long time client. This has usually allowed for a free flow of ideas.

The video meetings created a back and forth dynamic in the creative process. Both composers found they could carry out ideas more fully before taking them to the group or tossing them. The remote process also allowed them to make more space where Schwartz really shines: creative. Flavorlab handled foundational elements like outlines, tempo maps, larger themes, and solved technical issues. Meanwhile, Jeff’s ideas refined the musical storytelling.

The team was dedicated to the organization’s multigenerational mission. As a result, the score took on a modern Motown sound. The music features a strong, driving bass line and electronic drums. Initially looking to include live drum kit, the synthesized percussion tied in hip hop elements that better symbolize the organization’s commitment to uplifting their youth. Finalizing the main theme, they needed a singer. As in years past, Marlon Saunders took the job. In one remote session and just four takes, he provided a warm, uplifting top line. But the score wasn’t quite done.

The story needed a track for scenes of the FIRST robotics competition. Set in an arena, the atmospheric is sporty and amped up. Our catalogue provided options to fill the shift in tone. Our supervisors found a lively dance beat to underscore the young engineers battling it out. Finalizing the audio, the sound team mixed the short film.

Results

Flavorlab Score delivered a complimentary score to our long time client. We successfully completed a music project entirely remotely. Creating in a new way streamlined our communication and allowed us to further solidify our client’s vision. As the pandemic continues, they will employ many of the same processes. They look forward to integrating more remote work as things open up. You can watch the full video above. Find more on the project below!
