Flavorlab Develops Sound Identity for MTV2’s “Guy Code”

New York, NY – March 16th, 2015

The boys are back! As always, with a little help from the whole team here at Flavorlab. The current season of MTV2’s hit show Guy Code features work from all three divisions of the company. Firing on all cylinders, mix, original score, and music licensing came together to enhance the real-life in the show.

Composer and sound engineer, Brian Quill, provided the main theme song, show sound design, and mix. The theme features his vocals and, calling on the ultimate guy code, pays homage to chanting monks. “The sound choices and timing of the sounds play off the dynamic graphics. We also wanted highlight the content of what the comedians are saying,” explains Quill. “We always focus on matching the graphics, but it’s exciting to build outside the lines a bit.”

Show creator and executive producer, Ryan Ling, established a collaborative workflow with Quill. “As a mix and sound design team we try to take risks and push the limits. We really rely on Ryan and the other producers to let us know where those limits are.

Comedy is a delicate art. It’s a balance of content and timing that is always a fun challenge.”

On the licensing side, Flavorlab Producer’s Toolbox curated mostly hip hop and electronic tracks. The comedic, modern show required a fresh sound brimming with confidence. Looking for dynamic and ear catching cues, they successfully filled out the shows underscore. Through a simple, intuitive platform, editors and producers were free to search our entire catalogue.

All five seasons of Guy Code feature Flavorlab Score, Flavorlab Sound, and Flavorlab Producer’s Toolbox.

Guy Code Season 5 airs Wednesdays at 11pm EST/10pm CST on MTV2
