Project
PBS approached Flavorlab Score to create a custom scoring package for their “Best of the Indies” series. The series highlights the six best independent documentaries released through the network. The featured films are I Am Not Your Negro, Do Not Resist, Dolores, No Man’s Land, Bill Nye: Science Guy, and Served Like A Girl. Jeffrey Hughes, Creative Services Director for PBS, tasked composers Erik Blicker and Glenn Schloss with six variations on a theme, each adaption representing one film.
Goals & Process
The composers began with a theme they could adapt to be both fun and serious. Keeping in mind the range of stories they had to represent, instrumentation was key. For some, they used regional, acoustic instruments like nylon and slide guitar. For others, a more orchestral approach took over. All six variations were written, arranged, and recorded in-house at Flavorlab. In the end, they had a set of varying soundscapes tied together through their melodic commonality.
Results
PBS aired promotions, a summary of the upcoming film screenings, and all six independent films during their 2018 season. Flavorlab and the network have collaborated on a number of projects since.
