PBS Previews The Best Of Indies With Flavorlab Score

Trailer for The Best of PBS Indies

PBS approached Flavorlab Score to create a custom music package for their “Best of PBS Indies” series. The series highlights the best independent documentaries released through PBS. Jeffrey Hughes, Creative Services Director for PBS, asked for adaptable theme music to fit the aesthetic of each documentary showcased. In this way, the music unites the works into a cohesive final product.

“Flavorlab Score was more than up to the challenge. The theme had to represent six very different independent films. The profound and profane to the shocking and inspiring. The team created variations on the opening theme to match each of the films. Each had a distinct approach, nuance, instrumentation, and timing. As a result, we got a group of organic, unifying tracks that maintain the flow and energy of the show. This gives PBS and our lineup of outstanding independent films a unique showcase.”

-Jeffrey Hughes (PBS Creative Services Director)

Erik Blicker and Glenn Schloss of Flavorlab Score composed a theme they could adapt as both fun and serious. Then, they molded this foundation to reflect the individual stories being presented. Orchestrating, writing, and recording in-house, the duo created adaptations. They used regional, acoustic instruments like nylon and slide guitars. In the end, they created six soundscapes tied together through their melodic commonality.

Afterwards, Erik reflected on his experience with the project: “We absolutely love working with Jeffrey. He’s rare in his understanding of music and he makes suggestions that improve the structure and impact of the show package music.” Flavorlab looks forward to continuing its partnership with PBS for years to come.
