Tooned In

Promo for Tooned In on Nickelodeon

Project

Nickelodeon started airing the first season of their newest trivia game show, Tooned In, February 1st. The show tests Nick super fans on their knowledge of cartoons past. Hosted by A.I. supercomputer “Nicky,” like the Slime Time Lives and Double Dare, no wrong answer would be complete without slime! Viacom hired Flavorlab Sound to provide mix for the series.

Process

The sound team worked with producer Mike Silvon to deliver the mix. In stereo and up close, the two challenges the team faced were with audience sound and the close mics on the contestants. Filmed during the pandemic, a live studio audience was not invited to set. However, the network still wanted the warm interaction between the youngsters and an audience. The editor added crowd and applause sound, which our team enhanced. Ultimately, they achieved a realistic sonic interaction by widening the stereo field and mixing in additional audience noise.

No Nick show would be complete without the goopy, wet, and mysteriously green bucket of slime. While satisfying and visually dynamic, slime on a contestant means slime on the mics. The engineers worked methodically to EQ these moments to preserve the impact of the splatter while allowing our young victim’s reaction to shine through.

Of course, finally, the cartoon robot “Nicky” is actually voice actor, Rama Vallury, which was easy to mix with the contestants’ dialogue as his voice was used live on the stage.

Results

Tooned In aired February 1st to March 6th. The team delivered a consistent and dynamic mix for a kids’ game show.
