Turning The Tables with Robin Roberts on Disney +

Rock’n Robin Productions teamed up with the Springhill Company and Disney+ to create Turning The Tables with Robin Roberts. The show is hosted by Good Morning America‘s Robin Roberts in discussion with various groups of iconic women in the entertainment industry. The series is four episodes long, set in the quiet back patio and living room of an LA home. Featuring never-before-heard stories and deep insights from these groundbreaking women, the conversations are intimate and vulnerable. Showrunner, Kadine Anckle, hired Flavorlab Score to create a show package and original theme for the series. Flavorlab Sound provided mix on all four episodes.
Process
Looking to create a warm, intimate sound, the composers, Erik Blicker and Glenn Schloss, created a bed of plucky, nylon guitars and hand percussion. Next, they needed a strong melodic element to tie in viewers. As Anckle asked, they needed to create a theme as iconic as the women in the series. They started auditions with vocalists, including Anckle’s old friend, singer-songwriter, Mai-Elka Prado. Pivoting partway through the process, production asked for a modern pop theme instead of the initial acoustic track. Each singer continued to demo through this change, sending improvised audition material from their home recording setups.
When it was clear the more modern direction wasn’t working, Blicker sent Anckle the initial theme ideas. The recordings were complete with his own voice in falsetto to represent a female vocalist. Confident the organic direction fit perfectly, Anckle had the team send final demos to Disney. With voice as the featured instrument, at every step, the composers worked to make each singer sound their best. They were asked to keep the melody relatively wordless so they workshopped vocalizations and ad libs with the singers via video chat. Before the final demo, Blicker called each singer to find their optimal key on the piano over the phone. Then, he transposed the tracks for each vocalist so the recordings would showcase their voices. Ultimately, Disney picked Prado to sing on the final themes.
On the mix side, Flavorlab Sound employed a light touch. Unlike most talk shows, maintaining the natural, outdoor environment was key. Their focus was clarity. Distracting sounds were filtered out just enough so not to make the space feel empty. They paid special attention to each speaker’s voice, using a mix of compression and low end reduction to add warmth and shimmer.
Results
Turning The Tables aired July 28th, 2021, on Disney+. The team successfully delivered a cohesive, connected package of themes and clear, warm dialogue mix. Connected by groove and instrumentation, each theme featured nylon guitars, hand percussion, and vocals by Mai-Elka Prado. The sound maintained the up-close-and-personal atmosphere Anckle and the production team sought to deliver to the viewer.
