Welcome The Stranger

Project

Welcome The Stranger (2018) is a psychological thriller from Yale Productions. The film follows siblings Alice and Ethan. Alive arrives unannounced at her estranged brother’s house attempting to reconcile. Bizarre visions, the return of Ethan’s strange girlfriend, and Alice’s paranoia force the siblings to cling onto reality amidst mysterious circumstances. Yale tasked Flavorlab Sound with full audio post production for the film. The team provided sound design, foley, and mix work.

Goals & Process

The team needed to create a sense of magical realism in the the sound. Shifting between moments of clarity and twisted fantasy, the sound design team opted for as organic an approach as possible. The “visions” throughout the film border on science fiction. Rather than use paranormal sound libraries to craft these moments, the team relied on their surroundings: New York City.

Set in a rural environment, bustling traffic and screeching subway cars sound foreign on the film’s nearly vacant country estate. Manipulating these recordings allowed the team to recreate a unique and otherwordly sonic landscape. From here, carefully mixing with the score, the sounds flow seamlessly. Head of audio post, Brian Quill, and sound engineer, Dennis Dembeck, explain the process below:
