In this episode of Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, the chef and his team head to the Caribbean. The episode explores the economic crisis in the United States island territory, Puerto Rico. Airing in November 2017, after the island was devastated by Hurricane Maria, the episode was filmed prior to the storm. The episode showcases Puerto Rican food, family, and tradition in spite of economic turmoil. In the wake of Maria, viewers get a much needed reminder of a vital piece of America’s cultural identity.

The Flavorlab Score team composed eight original cues for the project. The episode’s soundtrack relies on Puerto Rico’s rich musical history. From salsa to bomba, the score weaves in classic piano montuno and warm, longing acoustic guitar. Featured heavily throughout are a range of hand percussion grooves. For heavier moments, guitars are laden with reverb and delay. The music uses more synthesized sounds when the show pivots to the state of affairs. Much more room is left between each strum as the show discusses the economic crisis. The score captures the spirit of struggle and aims to honor the resilience of Puerto Rico and its people.
